Water

Water is plentiful in Connecticut, and the state is a national leader in water quality management. Droughts and widespread floods are infrequent and minor compared with national averages. The state has nearly 4,000 lakes and ponds, nearly 10,000 miles of rivers and streams and more than 200 miles of coastline.

Connecticut’s Central Coast is served by 2 companies, the Aquarion Water Company and the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority. See the map on this page for their respective service territories.

Sewer

Sewer is handled by municipalities in Connecticut’s Central Coast. Most areas are covered by city sewer systems.

Natural Gas & Heating Oil

Connecticut receives petroleum products at the coastal ports of New Haven, New London and Bridgeport and at terminals on the Connecticut River. Two of the nation’s four Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve sites are in New Haven. Connecticut receives natural gas by pipeline from production areas in the U.S. Gulf Coast region and Canada and from natural gas storage sites in the Appalachian Basin region. Roughly 60 percent of Connecticut businesses use natural gas.

Connecticut’s Central Coast is served by 2 natural gas providers. Southern Connecticut Gas serves 14 of the towns in our region. Yankee Gas serves Shelton, Ansonia and Derby. Telecommunications

Connecticut is in a dense fiber region and ranks 2nd in the nation for High-Speed Lines (ADSL, Wireline, Fiber, Satellite, Fixed Wireless) per 1 Million People. Carriers who service the State include: Lightpath, Fibertech, AT&T, Verizon, Optimum, Bell Canada, Level 3, Savvis, Cogent, Global Crossing and RCN Metro Optical Networks.
